Media Lab
Exploring how media shapes the ways we see ourselves, one another and the world. The Media Lab investigates how news, entertainment, advertising, social media and emerging digital environments influence our attention, values, relationships and worldviews - and how media can become a more conscious force for human, social and planetary flourishing.
About this Lab:
Human beings have always made sense of the world through stories. Today, those stories reach us through an unprecedented ecology of news, entertainment, advertising, film, gaming, social media, influencers, algorithms and increasingly AI-generated content.
The Media Lab explores how this rapidly changing media environment influences human and planetary flourishing.
Media does far more than communicate information. It helps shape what we notice, what we value, what we fear and desire, who we believe ourselves to be, how we perceive other people, and what kinds of futures we can imagine. From childhood onwards, repeated images, narratives and messages contribute to the formation of identities, aspirations, social norms and worldviews.
These influences can support flourishing - expanding understanding, creativity, empathy, belonging and awareness of perspectives beyond our own. Media can connect communities, amplify previously unheard voices, reveal injustice, communicate knowledge and help societies imagine possibilities that do not yet exist.
But media environments can also work against flourishing. Attention-driven business models, misinformation, polarisation, unrealistic social comparison, consumerism, stereotyping and repeated exposure to fear or conflict can influence wellbeing and social trust. Personalisation algorithms can further shape the realities people encounter, sometimes narrowing rather than expanding their understanding of the world.
The Media Lab therefore asks a deeper question:
What would a media ecology designed to support flourishing look like?
Rather than positioning media simply as a problem to be solved, the Lab will bring together researchers, journalists, storytellers, filmmakers, technologists, educators, young people and other creative practitioners to explore the conditions under which media can strengthen individual and collective wellbeing.
It will investigate the relationships between media, attention, human development, values and worldviews; explore how narratives influence our relationships with ourselves, one another and the living world; and consider the responsibilities associated with increasingly powerful technologies for shaping perception and behaviour.
Particular attention will be given to children and young people, whose identities and worldviews are developing within media environments fundamentally different from those experienced by previous generations.
The Lab will also explore the regenerative potential of media: its capacity to cultivate curiosity rather than certainty, connection rather than division, agency rather than helplessness, and deeper understanding across cultures, generations and worldviews.
Working across research, dialogue and creative experimentation, the Media Lab aims to help develop new principles, practices and forms of storytelling that recognise media not simply as a mirror of society, but as an active participant in shaping the cultures we become.
Because if we want to create more flourishing futures, we also need to pay attention to the stories through which those futures become imaginable.
